- Montage
- Raunchy
- Narrative
- No Lip Syncing
- Artist absent
- Random
Above are the different types of music videos, I want to create a video that has a strong narrative, I believe it is important to represent the song well and show to the audience what it is all about. The next step is to choose a song and plan the video. I believe if I am trying to achieve a strong narrative the song will have to be slow that focuses mainly on the voice. Artists that I can research into are Ellie Goulding and Ed Sheeran, I believe both artists achieve a strong narrative through their music videos and are talked about a lot.

Conventions of a Music Video
There is also a chance that as an individual we can produce a music video. I am now going to look at the Conventions of a Music Video;
1962 - Tell Him by The Exciters
- Didn't change location to maintain the audiences interest
- Singers perform to camera, which engages the audience
- Poor quality image
- Good tracking shots used
- Poor editing techniques (had to physically 'cut' film)
- Lip Sync included
2011 - What makes you beautiful by One Direction
- Both male and female attractive
- Good location, appeals to the younger audience
- Lip Syncing
- Cross Dissolves used
- A lot of editing
- Built a narrative
- Eye contact is used by the artist to engage audience
The difference of music video's in 50 years;
- Editing is much slicker, the industry now uses digital editing
- Bigger budget
- Film stock and cameras are better. Camera shots are more developed.
- Focus on the actual singer of the song
- Eye contact used
- Mixture of locations
I have decided that I am going to produce a music video, as looking through my research of short films, I realised that I wasn't as knowledgable on short films as I were on music videos. I usually enjoy watching music videos, and how they tell a narrative, I believe it would be a fun task to create my own.

Textual Analysis of Short Film 'Roses are Red'
In terms of Camerawork in the short video of 'Roses are Red' an over the shoulder shot is used at the start. The shot reflects the image of a girl walking alone, this signifies to the audience that the male actor is watching her closely, which questions the audience. A tracking shot is also used to follow the young female walking, the shot presents the females features and her blank expression. This enhances her importance in the video, and suggests that the male character associates with her. A high angle shot is used at the end of the video to show the photograph of the boy and the girl together, this concludes the story, it presents their relationship and answer the audiences confusion as to why he were following her. It also makes the boy seem slightly small, which suggests his grief and sadness.
The repetitive use of minor key sounds is used throughout the video, this suggests sadness, also due to the sound being played repetitively the tune stays in the audiences mind, which signifies the boys loss of his girlfriend is constantly playing on his mind. A voice over is also used, this adds mass effect on the audience of the boys mind speaking. The lasting voice over leaves a sense of sadness with it matching with the picture. The use of ambient sounds is used when the boy confronts a girl, this signifies normality, that realisation has struck that his girlfriend is no longer here. The ambient sound take the audience away from the sad minor key sounds to normality, which contributes to the audience finally realising what is going on.
A deep focus is used at the beginning of the short film, the deep focus represents the female behind the rain, it represents her image clearly which makes her stand out. The rain signifies sadness and almost adds a feel of surrealism with the girl being behind. A blur is used on the rose, this suggests that the rose has importance in the film, the blur has an effect the the rose is not there, which ironically suggests that the girl is not there anymore. Slow motion is also used as part of editing, when the female actor is walking amongst the buildings of Coventry the technique is used. This again highlights her importance in the film, it creates her as a character that the boy adores, that he is watching her every movement.
As part of the mise en scene a rose is used as a prop. The rose connotes many things; love and romance, the strong colour of red reinforces this. The fact that it is dropped signifies that their love has been 'lost', close ups are used to reinforce the importance of the rose. The setting of the film is highly important, the buildings of the city create interest for the film, and contrasts the young female against the high buildings. The picture at the end of the film is again very important, it concludes the film of to who the female is and relation to the male character. It represents how much the boy adores the girl and leaves the audience with a lasting sense of sadness.
